About Chemical Peels
To produce the highest quality results from chemical peel treatments, San Diego Cosmetic Clinic provides patients with a vast selection of choices. Your medical-grade chemical peel with exfoliating solutions (such as salicylic, glycolic, trichloroacetic, and lactic acids) will produce smoother, healthier skin. At our San Diego, CA office, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steve Laverson offers these nonsurgical skin care treatments to address skin irregularities, such as fine lines, wrinkles, scars, dry patches, hyperpigmentation problems, and more. Chemical peels eliminate damaged, dead skin cells with a unique solution to cause the topmost layer to flake off. When your skin recovers and starts to repair and rejuvenate itself, you will notice a smoother, clearer complexion. A chemical peel facial can make your complexion luminous for several years.
Variations of Chemical Peels
At our San Diego, CA office, we offer chemical peels varying in strength (light, medium, and deep) to accommodate each of our patient's unique skin concerns and goals:
- Light peels: You can receive a light peel during your lunch hour and go right back to your day. This type of peel will remove the outer layer of your skin (the epidermis) to give your facial features a more radiant appearance and smoother texture. We usually recommend that you schedule a light peel at least once a month to maintain your glowing results.
- Medium-depth peels: This type of peel delves further into the skin so patients generally decide to heal from this treatment over a long weekend. You may also want to ready yourself for increased discomfort during and about one hour following your treatment. Medium-depth peels are for patients who have deeper damage to their skin, like severe lines and darker pigmentation issues.
- Deep peels: The strongest of the three levels of peels is the deep peel. Due to its strength, it requires the longest recovery time. This is an aggressive treatment that may leave your face peeling, itchy, and swollen for up to a few weeks. Patients who receive a deep chemical peel will have age or dark spots, sun damage, entrenched acne scars, and/or deep scars. Since this type of chemical peel is generally uncomfortable for patients, your aesthetician may provide you with anesthetic as a part of your treatment.

"I must start by saying that I very rarely write reviews. But I recently recalled my experience with Dr. Laverson, and felt compelled to leave a long-overdue review that he truly earned. My situation was also quite different from most of his typical work, so I hope this also attests to his wide-ranging surgical skill. A couple of years ago I was involved in a bad motorcycle accident and wound up at Palomar Hospital. According to my family, doctors, and nurses, my face was pretty much smashed to bits and looked extremely gruesome. Some parts of my face were even missing. Anyway, Dr. Laverson was the on-call plastic surgeon that night. Once the E.R. doctors had gotten me stable, he had the impossible task of trying to fix my Freddy Krueger face by looking at an old picture of me on my fiance’s cell phone. Or at least it should’ve been impossible based on how bad my condition was...Fast forward a day or two, after my swelling from the surgery had gone down in order to see the results, my family and some coworkers came in to see. NONE of them could tell a difference from before the accident, including the coworkers who hadn’t seen my smashed face. Somehow, some way, Dr. Laverson was able to use plates, grafts, and whatever other tools and tricks in his brilliant surgical mind to make me look IDENTICAL to how I looked before splattering multiple pieces of my face on the side of a road. Shortly after my family, friends, and coworkers visited, Dr. Laverson himself visited as well to observe the post-swelling results, see how I was feeling, and to follow up on all the medical stuff he knew to look out for. He even asked my family and I if there was anything out of place, or changes we’d like to make, since he was happy to do another surgery to get everything exactly right. Because everything was already perfect I didn’t do another surgery, but his offer, his following up with me, and his sincere concern for my well being was absolutely amazing. There is only one last detail I want to mention, but it speaks volumes for Dr. Laverson’s outstanding character and genuine desire to help people feel beautiful and be happy with their looks. Since this was in the emergency room at the hospital, not only was it different than his usual surgeries by its type and difficulty, but the emergency was also paid for by my medical insurance. In the medical profession, this often means a significant pay-cut for the doctor from what they would normally charge. I don’t know if my surgery wound up being one of those times for Dr. Laverson, but I do know that he did a spectacular job given my horrendous condition, all while cancelling his Friday evening plans, and likely earning less than usual as well. I hope this review helps prove to potential customers that Dr. Laverson is a caring and outstandingly skilled surgeon, and to put anyone’s mind at ease that may be nervous or unsure about plastic surgery. And lastly, Dr. Laverson, I want to personally thank you for everything outlined above. I know there is no way I can ever really reciprocate what you did for me, but I hope this review can at least help show people and spread the word that you are an absolutely amazing person and professional."- D.S. / Google / Jun 11, 2019
"Dr. Laverson is incredibly thorough and passionate about his work. He answered all of my questions prior to my breast augmentation and tummy tuck. Following my procedure, Dr. Laverson went above and beyond during my follow up appointment to ensure I get the best results. Office staff is very welcoming, and they even called to check up on me after my procedure. I feel like a new woman, and I’m more confident than I have ever been. Seeking the advice of a cosmetic specialist should be the first step in your journey to attain smooth, healthy skin. A team member at San Diego Cosmetic Clinic will evaluate your skin during an examination at our San Diego, CA office before selecting a chemical peel for optimal results. Chemical peel patients, both men and women, will have visible issues with their skin, such as scaly patches, flaky skin, uneven pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, or more. We may recommend different levels of peels to meet your needs and concerns.
On the day of your appointment at San Diego Cosmetic Clinic, we will ask you to lay in a comfortable position as we administer your treatment. A team member will ensure the skin is cleaned prior to applying the personalized solution to the face and/or neck. We will brush the solution onto the skin and let it set for an appropriate window of time. Then, we will clean the peel off of your skin and apply a neutralizing agent. Patients may want to bring sunscreen and a hat to wear outside following the treatment to avoid sun exposure.
What to Expect
Depending on the type of chemical peel you receive, you should expect your skin to peel and itch for a period ranging from several days to two or more weeks. Dr. Laverson or a member of his team will provide you with instructions about how to care for your complexion after your appointment. Please remember that no matter how badly your skin itches throughout the healing process, it's not a good idea to peel or pick at the skin. Doing this could cause scarring and undo the improvements of your treatment.
Chemical Peel FAQ
How much does a chemical peel cost?
Dr. Laverson can talk about your costs in your consultation once he has created your chemical peel treatment plan. The cost of a chemical peel will vary based on the level you choose. San Diego Cosmetic Clinic takes several payments methods, and there are often specials on treatments like chemical peels. You may also consider buying a package of several chemical peel treatments.
What level should I choose for my chemical peel?
Which level of chemical peel is best for you will depend on your unique skin needs and cosmetic goals. During your consultation with Dr. Laverson, he can help you choose which chemical peel is best for your skin. A few things you may want to consider are your general health, your skin type, how deep you want the peel to work, how long you can spend in recovery, and what you want the peel to accomplish. For first-time patients, it may be better to try a light chemical peel and decide how you like the results. After this, you and Dr. Laverson might adjust your plan to discover the best chemical peel level for your needs.
Should I get a chemical peel or dermabrasion treatment?
Dermabrasion and chemical peels are both facial rejuvenation procedures that treat surface irregularities to give your skin a smoother appearance. The main difference is that dermabrasion requires surgical tools (a rotating brush or shaving instrument ) to clear away the top layer of skin through a careful exfoliating process. A chemical peel uses a caustic solution that is applied to your skin to dissolve damaged skin cells. In your consultation, Dr. Laverson will explain the pros and cons of each and help you choose if dermabrasion or a chemical peel best fits your needs and goals.
Will my face hurt after a chemical peel?
Based on the formula selected, you might have mild discomfort when it is on your skin. If you have a light peel, you may feel a little stinging, but it can be alleviated with a small fan. Medium and deep peels are better for deeper skin issues and longer-lasting results, but they can cause greater discomfort. Numbing cream, medications, and soothing ointments may be used to help you feel more comfortable during your treatment. Dr. Laverson, or a member of his team, will go over how to care for your skin after a peel to extend your results.
Can I combine a chemical peel with other treatments?
For even greater improvements to your skin, you may combine a chemical peel with another nonsurgical skin treatment at San Diego Cosmetic Clinic In your consultation, be honest with Dr. Laverson about your skin and cosmetic problems so he can create a unique treatment plan that delivers your best results. This may include an injectable treatment for wrinkles ( like JUVÉDERM® or BOTOX® ) plus a chemical peel to refresh your entire face.
