About Lip Augmentation

Whether you have naturally slim lips or if you've lost fullness in your lips as you aged, lip augmentation can help to create a fuller, more attractive pout. Surgical lip enhancement can be done with silicone implants, a fat transfer, or a lip lift to obtain the look you want, but lip augmentation with implants provides the most lasting results. If you're interested in learning more about lip augmentation, contact San Diego Cosmetic Clinic in San Diego, CA to schedule a consultation. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steve Laverson will explain your options and help you create a customized treatment plan that achieves all of your goals.

Ideal Candidates

Surgical lip enhancement can give you more voluminous lips and a shapelier mouth. Ideal candidates for lower and/or upper lip enhancement with silicone implants are patients who meet any of the following criteria:

  • Have naturally thin lips or have age-related volume loss in the lips
  • Have asymmetrical or uneven lips
  • Want to balance the overall appearance of your face
  • Are in overall good health

SURGICAL Techniques

Lip augmentation with implants is performed as an outpatient procedure in our office and typically with local anesthesia. The treatment itself can take up to an hour from start to finish. For your lip implant surgery, a thin incision will be created at the corner of the lips so the silicone inserts can be placed underneath the skin. It may take about a week for swelling to subside as the implants settle into their positions on your mouth. Although you have many options for lip augmentation, such as fillers and facial fat grafting, implants will produce the most long-lasting improvements. Unlike with fillers, you will not require annual touch-ups to maintain your results.

What to Expect

Prior to your procedure, Dr. Laverson will give you post-op instructions to promote healthy and speedy healing. After receiving lip implants, your mouth will likely feel tender and sore for several days. Cold compresses and nonprescription pain relievers can be used to alleviate any swelling or discomfort that you may experience during your recovery. It's important to attend any follow-up appointments after your surgery so we can monitor your healing and progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the lips of a specific celebrity?
Many patients already have an idea of the results they want even before their consultation. Having pictures of lips you'd like can help Dr. Laverson to better understand your goals, but it's important to have realistic and flexible expectations. During your first appointment, Dr. Laverson will carefully assess the condition of your lips, as well as your goals, before discussing your options. From there, he will be able to develop a personalized treatment plan to give you the outcome you want.

Should I get implants, a fat transfer, or fillers?
Whether you should receive implants, a fat transfer, or fillers can depend on several factors. If you'd prefer long-lasting results, then lip implants or a facial fat grafting may be better options, whereas fillers could be better for patients still unsure of the exact enhancement they'd like. During your consultation, Dr. Laverson will make informed suggestions and help you understand which technique would better suit your goals and needs.

Do lip implants look fake?
Implants are made from a silicone material that's designed to look and feel natural. With his years of experience and training, Dr. Laverson inserts lip implants so your outcomes appear natural and seamless. During your initial consultation, the size of your implant(s) will be decided based on your goals and preferences.

Is lip augmentation reversible?
Generally, patients tend to be very happy with their lip augmentation results. However, if you're unhappy with your new look for any reason, you may opt to have your lip implants taken out. If you're uncertain about lip implants, Dr. Laverson might recommend fillers because they're minimally invasive and the results will fade over time. For dermal fillers, the formula will eventually absorb into your body so your lips will naturally return to their normal appearance.
