What is Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Usually after one or more pregnancies, significant weight loss, and/or aging, abdominal wall bulging, loose skin, and extra fat may be detrimental to ones appearance, comfort, and lifestyle.  Healthy diet and regular exercise help, but cannot tighten skin or flatten the abdomen stretched by pregnancy.  Tummy tuck surgery may be the only possibility for restoring a more trim abdominal contour.  Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steve Laverson wants it as naturally beautiful and fit appearing as possible, so incorporates techniques he developed to achieve a bikini worthy outcome.

Abdominoplasty, also called tummy tuck, is a body contouring cosmetic procedure to improve the aesthetic appearance of the post-partum, post weight loss, bulging, and/or aging abdomen by tightening loose skin, removing fat, and shaping the skin surface for better fit in clothing and more youthful, fit appearance out of clothing. When performed by a skilled plastic surgeon with artistic vision, results can be gratifying and long-lasting. WHo is an Ideal Candidate for a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery can be performed for both women and men. If you find yourself frustrated with loose skin and unwanted fat in the abdominal region, this surgical procedure can produce a slim, toned appearance. Your abdominoplasty will be entirely customized to suit your unique body, needs, and goals. Patients considering a tummy tuck should be at a healthy weight as this is not an alternative for weight loss. Dr. Laverson also recommends that women considering the surgery should be past childbearing so their results are not compromised. In order to determine if you are an ideal candidate, Dr. Laverson will perform a thorough evaluation of the area in question and assess your aims and concerns.

Surgical Technique

Tummy tuck surgery is performed in our San Diego, CA operating room with the patient under general anesthesia. To complete your tummy tuck, Dr. Laverson will employ his own uniquely developed methods and modify your procedure to suit your wants, needs, and frame. The preferred tummy tuck method used is the mini tummy tuck. This technique uses a short scar to remove the skin from just above the navel down to the pubic region. If pockets of fat are present, Dr. Laverson will remove these first, then stretch the skin so it is tight and secure it with sutures. From there, surface contouring may be done to create a fit, fresh appearance. Dr. Laverson takes special care to suture your incision so that any resulting scar is minimal in appearance.

What can i Expect after a tummy tuck?

After your tummy tuck surgery, you will be fitted with a custom compression garment and monitored before being sent home to recover. It will take some time before you become comfortable with walking and standing again so you should be sure to take it easy for a few days. Moving will become less painful once your muscles adjust and your incision heals. You will go through three stages of wearing compression garments so it's important that you attend all your follow-up appointments at San Diego Cosmetic Clinic and follow all of Dr. Laverson's post-surgical instructions. As your recovery progresses, you will be able to do more and more, and should even be able to resume strenuous physical activity, such as long-distance running and core exercises, about three months after your surgery.

Tummy Tuck FAQ

Is abdominoplasty the right option for me?
Abdominoplasty is not a weight loss procedure. It is best suited for patients who are at a healthy weight but struggle with excess folds of abdominal fat and skin that has not been impacted by a healthy diet and regular exercise routine. A tummy tuck procedure may help women who have endured one or more pregnancies, especially demanding pregnancies, and have a stretched out abdominal wall with or without extra loose skin and extra fat.

What will my scars look like?
The incisions needed for your abdominoplasty will vary, depending on your degree of excess skin. During all tummy tucks, Dr. Laverson creates the smallest, thinnest incisions possible to minimize scarring. He also places incisions in low areas that are less visible so they can be easily hidden by underwear or a swimsuit. Following your tummy tuck, it is important to adhere to your scar management instructions so your incisions heal properly and eventually blend into your natural skin.

Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?
Although you may still get pregnant following an abdominoplasty, it will likely affect your results. Dr. Laverson strongly encourages that you be finished building your family before you undergo abdominoplasty. If you do become pregnant following your tummy tuck, another surgery may be performed to refresh your outcomes.

Can I get a tummy tuck with another surgery?
Many patients combine a second body surgery with abdominoplasty to receive more dramatic results. At your initial consultation with Dr. Laverson, talk to him about all of your desires so a comprehensive surgical plan can be created to match your aesthetic goals. You might combine abdominoplasty with a thighplasty for a lower body lift or other areas for all over body contouring. If you want to rejuvenate your whole body after having children, you might be a candidate for a mommy makeover.
