What is rhinoplasty, and why do I need it?

Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a “nose job,” is one of the most popular procedures in plastic surgery today. Depending on the desired enhancement from the patient, there can be minimal cosmetic corrections to full reconstruction. The goal is to improve the size, shape, and proportion of the nose to bring balance to the face for a more aesthetically pleasing look.

There are many reasons men and women consider rhinoplasty, including purely cosmetic reasons, correcting previous trauma, or improving functionality. Because the nose isn’t fully developed until late adolescence, Dr. Laverson recommends that patients be at least 16 years old. After that, you can get rhinoplasty at any age, but the sooner, the better, so you can enjoy your new look for as long as possible.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

All of the procedures at San Diego Cosmetic Clinic are performed in an AAAASF-accredited facility, and patients will be placed under general anesthesia. Depending on the desired procedure, Dr. Laverson will use the open technique, where incisions are made on the bridge of the nose, or the closed technique, where the incisions are more discreet inside the nostril.

During the procedure, the skin will be gently lifted so the necessary cartilage, bone, and tissue can be removed, reshaped, and/or restructured. If there is a problem with a deviated septum, it can be corrected at this point in the surgery. The incisions are then closed, and the healing process begins.

How long is the recovery from rhinoplasty?

As you leave our facility at San Diego Cosmetic Clinic, you will be sent home with all of the necessary home care instructions and bandaging supplies, including a nose splint that must be worn for at least 2 – 3 days after your procedure. There will be swelling and bruising after your surgery that may last for up to a week. You may also experience discoloration under the eyes. This is all normal.

It may take up to four weeks before a full recovery is realized, and strenuous activity is not recommended. During this time, you will start to see the results take effect. A cold compress and over-the-counter pain-relieving medications will help with the discomfort. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled for 2 – 3 days after the surgery to assess your healing.
